The Energy Management Program’s Certificate of Proficiency is designed to provide students with the fundamentals of building science with an overview of energy management. Students will learn about the various systems that make up a building, such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, lighting, and electrical systems. Students will also explore energy modeling through various software. This program is designed to prepare students for an entry-level career in energy management, building science, and related fields, with a focus on sustainable practices and green technologies.

Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of energy production, distribution, consumption, and efficiency, with a focus on high-performing building designs, solar, wind, and hydroelectric systems, and other renewable energy sources.
  • Develop the ability to perform building envelope analysis, duct blasting, blower door testing, and other diagnostic procedures to evaluate a building’s energy efficiency.
  • Gain knowledge of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BPI (Building Performance Institute), RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network), and HERS (Home Energy Rating System) certification process and the ability to evaluate a building’s compliance with energy codes and standards.
  • Prepare to sit for the LEED and BPI Certification Exams.
  • Gain practical experience with data analytics, including the use of energy management software to track energy consumption and evaluate energy performance.
  • Develop an understanding of the economic, environmental, and social impacts of energy production and consumption, and the ability to evaluate the return on investment for various energy efficiency measures.
  • Gain knowledge of HVACR (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration) systems and the ability to perform system assessments and design energy-efficient solutions.
  • Gain knowledge and experience in building envelop design and construction, with a focus on energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and sustainability.
  • Develop an understanding of the interrelationships between energy, the environment, and human well-being, and the ability to promote sustainable energy practices.
  • Develop an understanding of current and emerging trends in the energy industry, including new technologies and best practices, and the ability to stay informed and embrace new and innovative solutions.
  • Gain the ability to communicate effectively about energy-related topics and to work effectively in teams on energy projects, and the ability to present energy-related information to a variety of audiences.
  • Prepare for careers in the energy sector, including positions as energy analysts, auditors, consultants, managers, and renewable energy specialists, with a specific emphasis on high performing building designs and renewable energy systems.
