Medical Laboratory Technology, Associate of Applied Science

The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program is a two-year program which provides clinical and didactic education in the field. Upon graduation the student receives an associate of applied science degree. The program is designed to prepare the student to take the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) examination for medical laboratory technicians after graduation. This examination certifies the applicant as a registered medical laboratory technician, MLT (ASCP). MLT Clinical Affiliates include Baxter Regional Medical Center - Mountain Home, Cox Health Branson - Branson, Mo., Johnson County Medical Center - Clarksville, Mercy Hospital Berryville - Berryville, North Arkansas Regional Medical Center - Harrison, Ozark Health Medical Center - Clinton and Stone County Medical Center - Mountain View.

The My Academic Plan (MAP) serves as a guideline to graduate in five semesters. The Key Milestones/Prerequisites listed for each semester highlight significant achievements that must be completed in the degree track. Students who do not follow the five-semester plan and/or who do not complete identified milestones may jeopardize their financial aid (if applicable) and/or delay graduation.

Academic Preparedness

Northark recognizes the important connection between student success and academic preparedness. Students may be required to complete one or more of the following courses before enrolling in the MAP sequence of courses. Summer and/or intercession courses may be required to graduate within five semesters. Developmental course credits earned do not count towards degree completion requirements.

Students must complete each required course in the remainder of this MAP with a minimum grade of “C” to obtain this degree.

Students begin in the Pre-Allied Health Technical Certificate. Required courses (bold) from the Pre-Allied Health Technical Certificate are to be completed prior to program entry include:

  • Students who complete the above Pre-Requisites (Sciences taken no longer than 5 years previous to application) are ready to apply to the MLT Program.
  • Applicants who have taken or enrolled in a science course more than two times and have not earned a grade of C or better will be advised to consider application to other programs. Withdrawals are counted as an enrollment. The MLT Director may review applicant’s grades for special admission consideration.
  • Upon written program acceptance, the following courses are taken in sequence.
